Belong at the Ethical Society of St. Louis

This is a place to be fully yourself.

Belonging isn’t about believing the right things. It’s about being welcomed as you are, sharing values, and building meaningful relationships over time.

At the Ethical Society of St. Louis, belonging grows through conversation, service, reflection, and showing up for one another.

What Belonging Looks Like Here

Belonging at ESSL is not passive. It’s lived.

You’ll find:

  • People who value curiosity over certainty

  • Relationships that deepen through shared experiences

  • A community that supports one another through life’s changes

  • Opportunities to contribute in ways that fit your energy and interests

There’s no pressure to join right away. Many people start by attending events, joining a group, or simply coming on Sundays until it feels right.

Our Shared Values

We are united by values, not doctrine.

Human Dignity Comes First

Every person has equal worth. We reject systems that harm, exclude, or diminish others, and we practice compassion in how we treat one another.

We Trust Reason and Shared Experience

We believe understanding grows through curiosity, evidence, dialogue, and learning together.

Change Is Up to Us

A better world is built through human action. We take responsibility for ourselves, our community, and the impact we have beyond these walls.

Many Paths to Connection

There’s no single way to belong here. People connect in different ways and at different speeds.

You might find belonging through:

  • Discussion and book groups

  • Music and creative programs

  • Social gatherings and shared meals

  • Ethical action and service

  • Parenting and family programs

  • Leadership or volunteer roles

Some people jump in quickly. Others take their time. Both are welcome.

Membership: When You’re Ready

Membership is an invitation to deeper participation and shared responsibility. Members help sustain the Ethical Society through financial support, volunteering, and leadership.

Becoming a member means:

  • Supporting the mission and values of ESSL

  • Having a voice in the future of the community

  • Helping ensure this space exists for others

Membership is always optional. Belonging begins long before paperwork.

Volunteering & Leadership

The Ethical Society is shaped by the people who show up and contribute.

There are many ways to get involved, including:

  • Welcoming newcomers

  • Supporting Sunday gatherings

  • Helping with programs or events

  • Serving on committees or teams

  • Sharing skills, ideas, or time

Leadership here is collaborative, transparent, and rooted in shared values.

Who You’ll Meet

Our community includes humanists, agnostics, atheists, skeptics, seekers, and people from many religious backgrounds. What connects us is a shared commitment to ethical living, thoughtful conversation, and mutual respect.

You don’t need to leave your past behind to belong here. Many people arrive carrying complex stories. That’s part of what makes this community real.

Belonging Takes Time

You don’t have to decide everything right away.

Belonging grows through:

  • Showing up

  • Asking questions

  • Listening

  • Being seen

If you’re curious, you’re already on the path.
