Nursery School
Founded in 1968, the Nursery School at the Ethical Society of St. Louis extends the Society's concern with ethical education to the greater St. Louis community. The warm, nurturing environment fostered by the program is open to children ages 2 1/2 to 5 of all religious and racial backgrounds.
The Nursery School instills in children responsibility and concern for others by encouraging them to use their natural curiosity and creativity to explore feelings and solve problems. Through play, children learn to name and deal with feelings, both their own and those of others. Rather than being taught preconceived notions of right and wrong, children are encouraged to resolve conflicts themselves through thinking and compassion. In discovering, observing, and drawing inferences, students become independent and confident. Other features of the program include active efforts to help children respect nature and the environment and a weekly music and movement program.
In 1985, the Ethical Society Nursery School became one of the first early childhood programs in the St. Louis area to be accredited by the state of Missouri. The school maintains its accredited status.
Programs are available from 9:00-noon from September to May according to the following schedule:
- Two classes of 4- and 5-year olds respectively (7.5:1 student/teacher ratio) meet five days a week; optional extended care until 2:30 p.m. is available two days a week for these children.
- Children who are 3-years old in September meet three days per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays (7:1 student/teacher ratio).
- Children who are 2 1/2-years old in September attend a two-day program on Mondays and Fridays (6:1 student/teacher ratio).
