Ethics in Action

Ethical Action Committee meetings: Third Sunday of each month at 12:30 p.m. New members are always welcome.

Tuesday Women's Association meetings: Conversation, projects, brown bag lunch, and monthly business meeting Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by an hour-long program.

For more information on how the Society puts ethics in action, see the bulletin board and literature table in the Assembly Hall each Sunday.
Doing our part to create a more just and loving world for all mandates a strong commitment on the part of Ethical Societies and their members to their surrounding communities. Historically, the St. Louis Ethical Society has enriched its region by sponsoring educational outreach programs, fostering efforts at promoting civil rights and diversity, and supporting inner-city programs intended to bolster social services in St. Louis City. Today, our leader sits on the council of the Interfaith Alliance of Greater St. Louis (http://www.tialliance.org), a coalition of St. Louis religious leaders. And in 2000, Society members joined with Mentor St. Louis to instill a love of learning in and provide support to young students at Dunbar Elementary School.

Ethical Society members have two formal outlets for taking "ethical action" in the St. Louis community: the social causes committee of the Tuesday Women's Association and the Ethical Action Committee.

The social causes committee of the Tuesday Women's Association provides financial support to specific groups that promote Ethical Society interests and values. The group allocates one-quarter of the proceeds from its annual bazaar to various organizations, particularly those involved with providing hunger and shelter to the poor, promoting children's welfare, and protecting the environment.

The Ethical Action Committee, one of the largest committees in the Society, promotes and coordinates ethical social action between the Society and the surrounding community. Subcommittees of the Ethical Action Committee embrace a diversity of political and social viewpoints, including gun control, crime prevention, homeless and poverty issues, and environmental causes.

For a national perspective on ethics in action, check out the current AEU Ethical Action Report.
