Participate: Activism
Doing our part to create a more just and loving world for all mandates a strong commitment on the part of Ethical Societies and their members to their communities. The Ethical Society has a long and distinguished history of service both to Ethical Culture and to the general community.
Groups Internal to the Society
- Ethical Action Committee The Ethical Action Committee promotes and coordinates ethical social action between the Society and the surrounding community. Members of the Ethical Society embrace a diversity of political and social viewpoints, and participate in various causes on a local and national level.
If you're looking for new ways to get involved besides the Ethical Society, we maintain a Web page listing volunteer opportunities in the St. Louis area: Ethics in Action Directory.
- Tuesday Women's Association The Social Causes Committee of TWA, an Ethical Society group, provides financial support to specific groups that promote Ethical Society interests and values. The group allocates proceeds from its annual bazaar to various organizations, particularly those involved with providing hunger and shelter to the poor, promoting children's welfare, and protecting the environment.
- Earth Ethics Committee is a monthly group that shares ideas on how we all can lower our personal carbon footprint and live a more sustainable existence in harmony with the earth.
Gilpin Fund
The Gilpin Fund was established by the Ethical Action Committee in 1993 in honor of past chair, Doris Gilpin to help families and others on a temporary basis with utility bills. Most of our funds are given to the working poor, those on disability, social security, or public assistance. The appeals vary from sad to desperate. The fund helps many families.
The Gilpin Fund relies on tax-deductible contributions and members of the Ethical Society regularly hold fundraisers and benefits to solicit donations. The Ethical Action Committee administers the fund, verifies needs, and coordinates fundraising efforts.
Donation Boxes
The Ethical Society maintains several boxes for donations to various causes.
- Non-Perishable Food Box: You can help by donating non-perishable food items to the Ethical Action Food Project. Buy a couple of extra cans when grocery shopping and place in the marked container in the downstairs hall across from the kitchen.
- Victims of Domestic Violence Box: You can help by donating paper products and non-violent, children's toys. Place the items in the marked container in the downstairs hall across from the kitchen.
- Empty Printer and Toner Cartridges Box (The Big Green Box): Save those empty printer and toner cartridges. We can recycle them. The box is in the Assembly Hall in the northwest corner of the room (near the classrooms).
- Cell Phone Recycle Box (The Big Green Box): Save those old cell phones. We can recycle them. The box is in the Assembly Hall in the northwest corner of the room (near the classrooms).
