The Ethical Action Committee promotes, encourages, and coordinates ethical social action between the Society and the local and larger community through education and service. Members of the Ethical Society embrace a diversity of political and social viewpoints, and participate in various causes on a local and national level. Some areas of focus are listed below.
Community Development and Outreach: Ethical Society members participate in local community development efforts through organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Kingdom House and Winter Outreach. The Ethical Society also partners with Senior Connections to improve life quality for the elderly.
Death with Dignity and Living Wills: Ethical Society members are involved with organizations, such as the Final Exit Network and the Living Will Registry, working to ensure the basic right of humans to make end-of-life decisions.
Environment: Environmental issues are a focus for many Ethical Society members, who participate in organizations such as the Missouri Coalition for the Environment and the Sierra Club.
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues: The Ethical Society supports community groups that offer services to gay, lesbian, and bisexual people in the St. Louis area such as the LGBT Center of St. Louis and advocates for equality for all Missourians (PROMO).
Gilpin Fund: Established in honor of Doris Gilpin, a longtime Ethical Society member, the Gilpin Fund solicits and distributes funds to help needy families pay utility bills.
Health Care and Reproductive Rights: The Ethical Society supports reproductive justice for all (Faith Aloud) and efforts to obtain universal affordable health care through organizations such as Missourians for Single Payer and Medicare for All.
Highway Clean-up: The Ethical Society participates in Missouri’s Adopt-a-Highway program, picking up trash on Lindbergh Blvd. from Monsanto Dr. to Old Olive Street Rd.
Hunger Reduction: Members collect and deliver canned and non-perishable food to Operation Food Search, and the Ethical Society Youth Group regularly volunteers at the St. Louis Area Foodbank. The Society also participates in the national Share Our Strength Great American Bake Sale No Kid Hungry Program to reduce childhood hunger.
Religious Freedom: The Ethical Society promotes respect for the civil rights and constitutional freedoms afforded all faiths and religions in conjunction with the Interfaith Alliance.
Victims of Domestic Violence: Members advocate for domestic abuse victims and their rights and support local organizations like Lydia’s House, The Women’s Safe House and The Women’s Center. The Society also participates annually in the national Clothesline Project to raise awareness about domestic violence.
Youth and Education: The Ethical Society works together with the Gateway Institute of Technology and other organizations like Boys Hope Girls Hope to help youth in need.
