Kate LoveladyPlatform: It’s the End of the World as We Know It: Should We Feel Fine? by Kate Lovelady, Leader

For Earth Day, Kate Lovelady explores some of the psychological aspects of living in an age of both environmental crisis and great technological possibility. As ethical agents, how can we avoid the traps of despair and complacency to create motivation for ourselves and others? As a humanist community, how can we both enjoy life and be realistic about threats to the environment we rely on?

Podcast “The Poison of Extreme Inequality” by Bob Greenwell, Leader, Mid Rivers Ethical Society

Podcast LogoThe Poison of Extreme Inequality,” a platform presented by Bob Greenwell, Leader, Mid Rivers Ethical Society is now available on our podcast page.

Equality by itself is not a pure virtue. If it were, how could the value of the uniqueness of every person be maintained? Inequality by itself is not a pure vice. Extended beyond a certain point, however, it becomes a poison for everyone. The signs of this having happened in the U.S. will be set forth, along with analysis of why it’s happened, and thoughts on how to turn it around.

Book: Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health

Do you want to lose weight or understand the causes of obesity? Are you interested in knowing which calories are good and which are bad? Do you want to know why the mainstream thinking on nutrition may be causing more obesity and other illnesses? Are dietary fat and cholesterol really causing obesity, heart disease, and other problems? What is the contradictory evidence, and why is it omitted? You might be surprised by the history, politics, personalities, and science (or lack-thereof) behind the current nutritional recommendations and by the possibility that the current “wisdom” on nutrition is wrong. This book is one of the most important books I’ve read in my life, and I couldn’t put it down. Continue reading

TWA Chocolate-making Class Photos

The Tuesday Women’s Association (TWA) Chocolate Saturday was a huge success!  On Sat., April 7, fourteen women and two children attended a beginning chocolate-making class taught by Doreen Hulsey, who talked about some of the various types and other aspects of chocolate.  With milk chocolate, the class molded it, as well as made rocky road and chocolate with almonds.  Dipping items in dark chocolate, the class made many yummy, chocolate-covered items, such as caramels, peeps, Rice Krispie Easter eggs, and many more.

Kayla Vaughan was instrumental in helping throughout all phases of the class from conception through implementation, so a big thanks goes to Kayla!  Also, Sue Mendez, who attended the class and who also has made chocolates in the past to sell, was a big help at the Saturday class.  Not only did she bring her chocolate molds, but also she also helped out and provided additional advice.  Big thanks to Sue! Will Humanism End or Save Religion?

Here are excerpts from Sunday’s address, “Will Humanism End or Save Religion?” This is a question I’ve been thinking about for a long time–as well as wondering if it’s the right question, as you’ll see below. I’m curious to know what you think, as well as your opinion of Adler’s 3 spiritual pains and what religious humanism might do to help the ongoing process of the naturalization of religion.

For over a hundred years the mission of Ethical Humanism has focused on ethical action, on building communities in which people can support each other and inspire and organize good works. Continue reading

Podcast “World Hunger: Now is the Time to Speak Up” by Zach Schmidt, Bread for the World

Podcast LogoWorld Hunger: Now is the Time to Speak Up,” a platform presented by Zach Schmidt with Bread for the World is now available on our podcast page.

These are hard times. Millions of Americans are unemployed or underemployed, and more than one in five children live in households that struggle to provide enough food. Worldwide, nearly one billion people are hungry, and a child dies every six seconds of hunger related causes. Yet when people of conscience stand together, and when we persuade our leaders to prioritize these issues, progress can be achieved. This year, U.S. Congress is intensely focused on cutting spending, and vital U.S. safety net programs are on the chopping block, as is life-saving foreign assistance. Let’s speak up together to protect our most vulnerable neighbors here and abroad.
