Sun., May 6 Events & Platform: Coming of Age

Ice CreamPlatform: Coming of Age - Speakers and Music by the Coming of Age Class

In the last two years of middle school and the last year of formal Sunday School education, the 7th- and 8th-grade classes are singled out to recognize their transition from childhood to adolescence on their way to becoming young adults. The class is a concentrated year of study and fun, helping the individuals examine and embrace their “Ethical Identity.”

Our eighth graders spent this year broadening their minds, exploring other religions, and sharing deep thoughts in weekly Coming of Age classes. This special year in our Sunday School program culminates with Platform presentations, ranging from humorous to serious, by the graduates and their parents. You’ll be treated to some of their artistic talents as well. Honor these six extraordinary teenagers as they take the stage in this esteemed rite of passage and treasured custom at our Ethical Society:

  • Sam Banjak
  • Sabrina Edwards
  • Anthony Gulve
  • Cole Herman
  • Nathan Hoagland
  • True Morse

DVD: Reversible Errors (2004)

Scott Turow is one of my favorite authors. I’ve read several of his books, but mostly some while ago. I recently reviewed his non-fiction book about the death penalty, “Ultimate Punishment.”  http://ethicalstl.org/blogs/review/reviewreviewreviewultimate-punishment-a-lawyers-reflections-on-dealing-with-the-death-penalty-2003/

“It’s the End of the World as We Know It: Should We Feel Fine?” Platform notes

For Earth Day I gave a platform about climate change and our reactions and non-reactions to it. Below are some notes from that talk. As I also said, I struggle with how to talk about environmental crises in a way that will truly motivate people to take action. If anyone has any good ideas or examples please let me know!

Here at the Ethical Society, almost all of us accept the consensus of the international scientific community that the climate is changing, due in large part to humans releasing carbon into the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels, and we accept the prognosis that the changes in the climate will cause serious and painful disruptions to human life. (Update 2x) Please Check: Is Your Computer Affected by Malware?

Update 1x: If the FBI’s website says, “Service Unavailable. Please try again later,” please do try again later.  As of the morning of April 23, I’ve been able to get in sporadically, while yesterday the service was fine.

Update 2x: Since the FBI’s website seems to be swamped, you can go to http://www.dns-ok.us/, if you are in the US, to check your site.

Please run a check on your computer to see if you have the DNS Changer malware (malicious software) installed on it.  This malware, like much of the malware, will disable your antivirus, so your computer will be open to attack from other malware, like viruses and Trojan horses.

Go to the FBI’s website at http://dcwg.org/detect/ and click on the first URL (link) in the article.  Once you do that, you should see “DNS Resolution = GREEN” as long as your computer is not infected.  If you see “DNS Reolution = RED,” your computer is infected, and you need to click on the fix link provided to get rid of the malware.  If you do have the malware and don’t get rid of it, you may not be able to access the Internet after July 9.
